Presby Senior High, Tema History (PRESEC-TEMA)

History of Presby Senior High, Tema

On 31st January 1994, thirty-two students and four teachers assembled at the present site to begin classes. The school was informally opened on that day by Rev. Kwaku Ankama Akyeampong (then in charge of the Men's Desk at the Presbyterian Head Office) who acted as the synod clerk, Rev. E.S. Mate-Kojo. Only eight parents were present at that function; but twenty-four members of the Tripartite Committee of the church (from communities 1, 2, and 4) were present. The Tripartite Committee was the forerunner of the Board of Governors.

The Board of Governors was inaugurated on the 7th of July 1994; the school's formal opening took place on the 30th of July, 1994 with a student enrollment of sixty-nine. Five Part-Time Teachers were engaged to augment the regular staff. Mr. Alex Tettey-Enyo performed the formal opening, followed by the director (secondary education), who deputized for Mr. John Atta-Quayson, and then the acting director-general (G.E.S). Mr. K.B Asante (a former Diplomat) was the Guest Speaker.

The initial accommodation facilities consisted of four classrooms, the Headmaster's office, a general office, and conveniences for both staff and students. The headmaster's Office was partitioned to provide rooms also for the Bursa and the Typist. The Grace Presbyterian Church at Community 11 assisted with their accommodation facilities.

The school began with only two programmes. General Arts and Vocational (Visual Arts only). Later Home Economics and Business (Accounting Option) were added. The school offered a rare opportunity to twelve students (eight boys and four girls) to offer their sixth form Course from 1995-1996 in Mathematics, Literature in English, French, Geography, Economics, Art and Akan.

The school operated as a private school and in 1995, the School initiated an action for her absorption into the public system through the untiring efforts of Mr. Ebenezer Offei Awuku the then Headmaster, and the founding churches. This request materialized on 1st January 1998.

The school covers a land area of 1.68 Hectares presently occupied by the school itself and the Presbyterian Church of Ghana-Grace Congregation. It is a co-educational day school with a total population of seven hundred and five students.
