Adako Jachie Technical Institute Seeks to Change Name to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Technical Institute Amid Land Ownership Dispute

Ejisu, Ashanti Region – Adako Jachie Technical Institute, a prominent second-cycle technical school located in Ejisu, is currently in the process of seeking approval to change its name to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Technical Institute, in response to emerging land ownership concerns.
Originally established in September 1978 by the Kwamo community with the support of the local government, the school has long served as a pillar of technical education in the region. It has undergone several identity transitions—starting as the Community Development Technical Institute (CODTECH), then renamed Kwamo Technical Institute (Kwatech), and eventually becoming Adako Jachie Technical Institute (AJATECH). Academic operations officially began in January 1979.
For decades, the school was jointly administered by the local government and the Kwamo community. However, in January 2021, management of the institute began transitioning to the Ministry of Education under the Ghana TVET Service.
Now, the school finds itself at the center of a growing land dispute, prompting stakeholders to propose renaming the institute in honor of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as a strategic move to affirm ties to the Asante Kingdom and secure the institution’s claim to the land it occupies.
Despite the proposal, the name change has not yet been officially approved, and discussions are still ongoing with the relevant educational and traditional authorities.
Community leaders, school officials, and alumni have expressed mixed reactions to the proposed rebranding, with some viewing it as a necessary step for institutional security, while others urge caution and broader consultation before any final decision is made.
As the debate continues, the future identity of the institute hangs in the balance, pending formal endorsement from both the Ministry of Education and traditional leadership.
