Professor Kwamena Kwansah-Aidoo, new substantive Vice-Chancellor of University of Media, Arts and Communications (UniMAC)

The Interim Governing Council of the University of Media, Arts, and Communication (UniMAC), chaired by Prof. Kwesi Yankah, has appointed Prof. Kwamena Kwansah-Aidoo as substantive Vice-Chancellor effective May 1, 2023.

Prof. Kwansah-Aidoo was initially appointed acting Vice-Chancellor from December 1, 2022, to July 31, 2023.

Before that, he was Rector of the Ghana Institute of Journalism for 4 years from August 1, 2018. His term was extended by one year until July 2022.

His new appointment will see him serve as VC until July 31, 2024 - 5 extra months after turning 60 when he is due for statutory retirement in February 2024.

Though this is an anomaly in public service, sources say it is acceptable in tertiary institutions to allow leadership to end with the academic year.

Many hope Prof. Kwansah-Aidoo's 1-year substantive appointment will allow him to set a solid foundation before his tenure ends.

UniMAC was formed by merging the Ghana Institute of Journalism, Ghana Institute of Languages and National Film and Television Institute through  Act 1059.

Some staff and students have congratulated Prof. Kwansah-Aidoo and wished him well in his new substantive role as UniMAC VC.
