Sunyani Senior High History (SUSEC)

History of Sunyani Senior High

Sunyani Secondary School popularly known as SUSEC is one of the products of Ghana Education Trust. It was established in 1960 by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the then Prime Minister of Ghana.

The first batch of students 36, in number, comprising 31 Boys and 5 girls were admitted on Friday 30th October, 1960.

On 13th December, 1960, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah inaugurated the school at a colourful ceremony. The school started with only 3 Teachers and 9 Non-Teaching Staff.

Sunyani Secondary School started as a co-educational Institution but after a short time, people in high places decided to make it a Boys’ school. As a result, the few girls in the school were sent to Yaa Asantewaa Girls’ School. Fortunately the decision was rescinded and the following year, girls were admitted again to the school.

The first Headmaster of the school was the late Mr. P.D. Quartey, a bold Sportsman and adventurer who dared the unknown to come from Accra to Sunyani to start a big programme. He and his staff did a yeoman’s work to lay a solid foundation for great institution to emerge in Bono Region.
