Al-Azhariya Islamic Senior High was an initiative of Sheikh Mohammed Kamil Mohammed. It was started as a private institution in 2001 using the basic school classrooms. The school started with eighteen (18) students and the first headmaster was Mr. Ibrahim Musah Munah. With financing from the Islamic Development Bank, the first phase of accommodation development was completed and the school moved into it in 2009. During the 2011/2012 academic year, the school was transferred to the Government of Ghana.

To provide opportunity for knowledge acquisition and train students from Muslim dominated communities to appreciate religious diversity and inculcate in them Islamic moral values through a well-motivated staff to support quality education delivery.
