History of Afua Kobi Ampem Girls' Senior High
Afua Kobi Ampem Girls’ SHS was established in 1975 by General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong who was the former head of state of Ghana and a native of Atwima Hwidiem which is next to Atwima Trabuom where he attended his elementary school.
General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong noticed the pains and suffering he went through when he attended his elementary school, he realized the poor facilities and lack of skilled personnel were big problems hindering the school and that made him establish the school. The school was formally called Trabuom Senior High School in 1975. After some time, it was changed to Atwimaman Secondary School in 1980 which was still a mixed school, at that time the total number of students in the school was two hundred and fifty(250).
Atwimaman faced many difficulties , teachers did not want to teach in the school due to the lack of facilities and poor road networks. In 2003, His Majesty Otumfour Osei Tutu II ,the Ashanti saw the problem of the school, so he decided to renovate the school and change its name from Atwimaman S.S.S. to AFUA KOBI AMPEM GIRLS’ SHS(AKAGSHS),Which was the name of the queen mother of Ashanti kingdom, it was made a single sex school (only females).Otumfour Osei Tutu II contributed massively to the development of the school. He donated 200 mono desks, 100 double decker beds, 50 dining hall tables and 100 benches. With this upliftment of the school by Otumfour, the number of students in the school increased from 250 boys and girls to 500 female students. Parents in Ashanti region became convinced about sending their girl-child to a single sex school because they knew their wards will get good training. Since then, Afua Kobi Ampem started developing with many facilities where classroom blocks were built and various dormitories were also built.
The school was established by the government of Ghana in October, 1975. As a community school, it was co-educational under the name Trabuom Secondary School. However, in the course of time, the name was changed to Atwimaman Secondary School to give it the character of the traditional area of its location. Now the school is called Afua Kobi Ampem Girls’ Senior High School because when Otumfour Osei Tutu II ascended the Golden Stool, he adopted the school and named it after his mother Nana Afua Kobi Ampem the queen mother of the Asante Kingdom. The school is situated at Trabuom which is 22 kilometres West of Kumasi in the Atwima Kwanwoma District.
